The Value of Wisdom

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom and in all your getting, get understanding” (Prov. 4:7).

True wisdom is from God, and received through His commandments (Proverbs 2:6-7; 10:8). Wisdom is the ability to see the underlying significance or consequence of a thing, and then acting to bring about the best possible end. It is the ability to know the end from the beginning. All farmers know, “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Wisdom is that finger which so many times points us to the door of escape where we will find safety and righteousness. Companion to wisdom is perception. How do we see things? Being wise is the ability to look at the things around us and determine if they will lead us closer or further from God. Take a look at things in your life. Let’s think about where the word of God is leading us. Concerning the people around us, where is the word of God leading us? Regarding the situations or temptations that solicit us, where is the word of God directing our steps?

Paul prayed that the Ephesians might be enlightened with the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ (Eph. 1:17-18). He wanted them to have deeper spiritual insight. Wisdom provides that perspective. Knowledge which produces wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7).
